PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome
to NAWBO-Orange County! As the
third largest chapter
in the nation, with well over 300 members, NAWBO-OC offers
the broadest exposure to influential women business owners
of any organization in Orange County. As
2006-07 President, my platform is ‘Delivering the Value’ to
all of our constituents: individual members, corporate members,
affiliated
organizations, corporate
event
sponsors, and the Orange County community at large... continued
KUDOS
HKA,
Inc., owned by Hilary Kaye, NAWBO-OC's Public
Relations Director, was a big winner again on June 23rd in
the Orange County Chapter of the Public Relations Society of
America's annual awards competition. HKA continues their track
record of winning in every category entered—five awards
based on five entries. Awesome job, Hilary... NAWBO-OC is
VERY lucky to have you on our team!
Vanessa
O'Neill's Cedar
Spring has been chosen for the "Make Mine a $Million" Business
Program. Included are a
line of credit from OPEN from American Express, a business
loan from Count Me In, a year of intensive business coaching
and mentorship from a “dream team” of successful
women entrepreneurs and professional coaches; and
marketing and technical support to promote and grow their
business into a million-dollar enterprise within two years. Congratulations
Vanessa... You go girl!

Simple Steps to Venture Financing (#4 of 4-part
series)
by Cassie Hoag, Equity Architects, LLC
Step 3: Get Help If you’ve gone
through the list in Step 2, and everything’s in hand
and in order – GREAT! If not, get someone to help
you with the missing pieces. This could be an investment
banker, a financial advisor or a consultant, depending
on what needs to be done. Just make sure that you engage
someone who knows the venture fundraising process and is
connected in the investment community. Now, it’s
time to go to “the money”... continued
Negligent
Hiring:
What Every Owner Needs to Know About How to Properly Evaluate Employees by
Chris Felicijan, Pinnacle Investigations
Due diligence should
be considered a critical aspect of the hiring procedure, and savvy business owners
are
aware of this. In the United States 16% of the population has
criminal records, and one of every six job applicants has a
drug problem. Applications are falsified 40% of the time, and
murder is the third leading cause of death on the job. Employers
lose 72% of negligent hiring lawsuits... continued
Measuring
The Nation’s Wealth-building Progress With The
Nest Egg Score by
Pam Adams,
A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc.
When it comes to personal savings, we’re
not doing such a good job. As more and more people build up
higher balances on their credit cards and take out loans to
finance things they really can’t afford, the level of
savings in our country has dropped to record lows. But despite
all the negative news you’ve probably heard lately, there
is a glimmer of hope in the facts and figures behind a new
wealth-building performance measure from A.G. Edwards... continued

powerful united force with significant economic influence
and impact. But we do need to be willing to step up to
the plate as an advocate.

OC Helps Defeat Job-Killer Bill Over
the last 5 years, NAWBO members in Southern California
have successfully bid on dozens of MWD contracts worth millions
of dollars. That success story was in jeopardy of ending when
Assemblyman Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) introduced AB 2397.
If
passed, this bill would have prevented MWD from contracting
for professional services. Instead, MWD would have
been required to hire employees, creating a civil servant operation
very similar to Caltrans. NAWBO members did not stand idly by
and wait for the inevitable... The OC Chapter
and various members went on a letter
writing campaign to the legislature to give them the facts
about a civil servant operation, such as increasing operating
costs
and slowing down the time a project would be brought to completion.
On June 19th Assemblyman Calderon pulled the bill from committee,
stating among other things the groundswell of opposition from
the small business community.Once again NAWBO-OC made a difference!

NEWS FROM NAWBO NATIONAL
Third Annual Women Business Owners Survey: While
there are more than 10.6 million women-owned businesses in
the U.S. and the numbers are increasing, significant hurdles
still remain—from finding seed capital for start-up
to developing exit strategies. Are these hurdles diminishing
in number or
increasing? Or are they simply getting harder to clear? Your
responses to the Women Business Owners Survey,
sponsored by the University of Chicago, NAWBO, The Committee
of 200, and RSM McGladrey, Inc. can help us find out. More
importantly, your feedback can
help future women business owners better understand the challenges
that lie ahead and plan accordingly so that they too can be
successful. Click

approximately 15 minutes to complete. Deadline
is July 21, 2006.
