THE NEWS
Workforce Solutions Group, Inc., founded by NAWBO-OC Member Colleen Jones and Pamela Jung, CEO, ranks No. 221 on Inc. Magazine's "500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies" list published in the September issue. Their human capital consulting firm has enjoyed phenomenal sales growth of 1,139% in the last three years. Congratulations!
Parenting Orange County magazine's September issue features Darlynn Morgan of Morgan Law Group speaking out in their "Ask the Experts" section on the tough question: "if the unthinkable happened to me... what would happen to my kids?" Darlynn was also quoted Sept. 17 in the OC Register advising that to ensure your children's future in the event of your death, a will may not be enough. Darlynn, a personal family lawyer, frequently offers estate planning tips to parenting groups.
Jan Norman's Sept. 13 OC Register column on Going Green included quotes from three NAWBO members who discussed ways their companies take care of the environment: Cara Good, CEO of Wundermarx, encourages staff to car-pool to meetings; Michelle Pettit, President of PC Associates, installed a programmable thermostat to lower utility use during off hours and cuts down on printing and mailing by using e-mail for job proposals; and Liz Schmidt, Founder of Organic & Healthy, Inc., uses online brochures and catalogs. Liz also encourages other businesses to do more.
Decision Toolbox, where Kim Shepherd is CEO, was a featured panelist at "The Next Generation of Work Place Flexibility," on October 16, 2008 at UC Irvine's Merage School of Business, where panelists shared new work flexibility programs at leading-edge companies.

Partnering with California Secretary of State Debra Bowden
MyVote Democracy at Work Project
As the November 4 General Election is just around the corner, NAWBO-OC is invited to partner with California Secretary of State Debra Bowen in a bid to get employers to lead with her in improving voter registration and turnout.
While 58 percent of the state's registered voters took part in the February 5, 2008 Presidential Primary Election that represented only 40 percent of people who were eligible to vote. Since many Californians spend a significant amount of time at work, employers have a unique opportunity to help improve voter participation.
The MyVote Democracy At Work Project provides employers with simple tools they can use to spread the word about voting, including:
- Nonpartisan, voting-related messages employers can add to the company newsletter, to emails or to employee paycheck stubs and inserts.
- A "MyVote Election Information" website button employers can install on the company's internal or external website.
The website button links to the Secretary of State's voter education web page, where employees and customers can find out how to register to vote, vote by mail; be a poll worker on Election Day, get answers to frequently asked questions about voting, and much more. All this, plus the website button and instructions, is available at: www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter_ed.htm.
For a sampler of simple nonpartisan messages about voting employers can tailor to suit their needs, or to discuss other ways to inspire your employees and customers to take part in elections, please contact Arlene Pinzler of the MyVote Democracy At Work Project, at Arlene.Pinzler@sos.ca.gov or call her at (213) 897-6225.

The NAWBO Health Care Policy Working Group's Analysis of the Candidates' Health Care Reform Plans
Shaila Rao Mistry
NAWBO OC Public Policy Director
NAWBO National Health Force Task Force
The Health Care Policy Working Group has written this analysis with the goal of helping NAWBO members to better understand Senators Obama and McCain's plans for expanding access to health insurance and reforming our health care system. Along with a summary of the key points, we have explained what we believe to be the positive and negative aspects of each plan. We have also suggested some bipartisan compromises that we hope could help reform move forward.
Material presented is a compilation of analysis emerging from task force discussion and other sources of published data. Readers are urged to purse points of interest with further research and study. Read Analysis (PDF)

13th Annual Remarkable Women Awards

Whew!! The 13th Annual Remarkable Woman Awards is now in our history book, and because of all of our remarkable committee members, NAWBO members and Corporate Partners, it was another success! In spite of the economy and all of the tension in our country, we managed to get another full house, and the audience left invigorated and inspired!
The feedback has been wonderful, yet we still always have lessons to learn. The committee will be meeting in a couple of weeks so we can recap the event and note our lessons. After chairing the luncheon for two consecutive years, I am now passing the torch to Sherri Jones and Stacy McCullough. I am relieved, and ready to move on and help NAWBO in other ways, I am so confident that these two ladies and the next committee will take this premiere event to an even higher level.
There are a few people and companies I'd like to publicly thank now; unfortunately, their names were missed during the luncheon.
Luisa's Chocolate provided the most divine chocolate to each of our honorees at the Honoree Reception. We encourage you to partake of this divinity, visit their website at www.luisachocolatiere.com, or go in person and you will agree that you work so hard; you surely deserve a reward like Luisa's chocolate.
Fruition Advertising & Design, run by Tammi Spruill, designed and oversaw the programs and they looked so professional and were graphically aesthetic! Thank you too, Reinberger Printwerks, the printer of the programs, for your excellence.
Signs by Tomorrow, run by Arzu Simsek, printed the posters of all of the honorees!
As we mentioned at the luncheon, it is wonderful to have such professional, high caliber, women of integrity in our organization!
Remember to patronize our Corporate Partners and our membership! Thanks again for your support of this amazing and Remarkable event!

KUDOS
Excelerate recently partnered with USC's Rossier School of Education and will be working side by side with leadership over the course of the next 6 months. Additionally, Excelerate completed and executed a 3-year training agreement with The Dow Chemical Company.
NAWBO-OC member and president of Ultimate Gifts, Janet Cronick, was invited to the White House to attend the President's Hispanic Heritage Celebration on October 9th. Every year, a group of Latino leaders from around the country is invited to attend the President's Remarks in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event is held in recognition of the many Americans of Hispanic descent who have made outstanding contributions to our nation and to celebrate the spirit and accomplishments of Hispanic Americans everywhere.
Attending the ceremony hosted by President Bush was a rare honor, and one well deserved by Janet Cronick, who is a hard-working leader in the community in addition to her active NAWBO-OC membership. She co-founded the National Latina Business Women Association of Orange County and has traveled to Latin America to speak to various women's organizations on micro-entrepreneurship.
